Afterschool Print

Afterschool is provided free of charge to all families, regardless of their ability to pay. The Shack prides itself on providing the only free afterschool program in the county, and for presenting such a structured, exciting and fun atmosphere for children and families.

Afterschool is the longest running program of the year. It begins within the first week of school, and runs until the last day of school. Afterschool is open every day that public school is in session, and is closed on snow days and other school holidays.

The afterschool program is run by Mandy Webster with much help from Nicole Kimble, other staff, and volunteers. Our typical daily attendance is around 60 children, ages 5-14.  Two separate groups are made up of grades K to 2 and grades 3 to 5.Some days we have fewer children, and some days we have closer to 80 children attending.

Afterschool is broken down into periods. Those periods include play time, snack time, and homework time. Playtime may be structured or unstructured, with everyone playing together or with similar age-groups playing games together. Snack time is  a nutritious snack, served with milk or juice, eaten and served in a calm, quiet manner. Homework time is used to complete work, study for upcoming  tests, or read a book. Staff and volunteers work hard to help students stay on task and focused, while trying to help make sure learning is done in a positive, fun environment.

The wide diversity of educational pursuits of staff and volunteers lend themselves perfectly to a diverse child base, with specific individuals being called on for their particular knowledge about a subject or strategy. The resulting dynamic is a fantastic environment for learning and enrichment.
